More doors are opening for the Furniture Industry to enter Global markets.

Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Industry and Trade will coordinate with the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City (HAWA) to establish a steering committee and organize the HCMC Furniture Export Fair 2023 (HawaExpo 2023).

This is a continuation of the nearly 15-year-long close cooperation between HAWA and the Department of Industry and Trade in organizing export fairs and trade promotion activities for the wood industry.

Wood processing to become spearhead in export

In the context of a significant drop in orders due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, inflation, and ongoing political tensions between Russia and Ukraine, this is one of the activities that is regarded as important and practical, bringing opportunities for Vietnamese wood processing enterprises and the growth of Vietnam’s furniture industry in the future.

Identifying wood processing as one of the key export industries of Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Industry and Trade has actively coordinated with city departments, agencies and industry associations to implement trade promotion programs, improving the industry’s competitiveness with the goal of moving the wood processing industry quickly from downstream to upstream of the supply chain.

Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Industry and Trade will coordinate with the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City (HAWA) to establish a steering committee and organize the HCMC Furniture Export Fair 2023 (HawaExpo 2023).

The event has been modernized to attract and connect more international customers with Vietnamese companies.

HawaExpo will be the official fair, opening for trade promotion activities and assisting businesses with market expansion in 2023. The fair brings together all businesses involved in the furniture supply chain, including raw materials, production, processing, and auxiliary…

“The event will be an important link in the chain of activities of the Southeast Asian Furniture Industry Council – AFIC of which Vietnam is a member and is a key supply market”

Mr Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, said that in the project “Developing export in the city to 2025, orientation to 2030”, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City recognized wood products as one of the city’s primary export businesses.

Over the past two decades, the industry has established a certain foundation for growth. Faced with new global business conditions, the industry may lose its competitive advantage. Consequently, the transformation and modernization of the model, as well as the establishment of production and raw material supply centers, are necessary.

In order for wood processing to become a spearhead in the city’s exports, the identification scheme, trade promotion, market research as well as the development of added values must be focused.

In addition to displaying products and hosting business networking events, HawaExpo will dedicate exhibition space to the newest and most impressive designs of young designers and industry-based businesses.

In particular, there will be a space to honor products made from Acacia, the strong indigenous raw material of Vietnam today.

“In order for the wood industry to join higher segments of the supply chain, the innovative value must be properly invested. In my opinion, Vietnam is not only a place for processing, but it is totally possible to do business with its creations and brands”

Mr Vu.

Gathering tens of thousands of international buyers

HawaExpo aspires to be the main event of the city’s 2023 Furniture Industry, Creative Industry, and Tourism Service Expo Week in an effort to help businesses recover from the pandemic.

With a favorable geographical position, as a key center of the wood processing industry, around Ho Chi Minh City, there are 600 factories producing furniture and raw materials. Tens of thousands of buyers coming to Vietnam on this occasion will need accommodation, dining, utility services, factory tours, showroom visits, craft village visits…

In order to exploit all the values, the Department of Industry and Trade will serve as the link between the wood industry, represented by HAWA, and the Department of Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, etc. to jointly implement the above key program.

The highlight of HawaExpo is that it will focus on and create optimal conditions for start-ups to attend, as well as organize numerous activities to survey the needs of international buyers for specific data, thereby contributing to the state management agencies’ consultation in the planning of development strategies for the industry.

From February 22 – 25, 2023, HawaExpo will inaugurate an annual series of traditional wood industry exhibitions in the region. Immediately following the conclusion of HawaExpo, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Chinese furniture fairs will open in succession.
