An emerging issue with timber supply is the illegal importation from neighbouring countries around Vietnam. Major export markets, including Australia, the EU and the U.S. now require a declaration of legality for all wood products, including furniture. These declarations relate to international efforts to stop the unsustainable and illegal harvesting of timber. Only 9 percent of the world’s forests are certified as being sustainably harvested. Canada, with 36 percent of this total, is a leading source of certified, sustainable wood products. This level of certification offers Canadian exporters a significant advantage over other countries and regions that have not yet implemented a rigorous certification process.
In 2020, the Vietnam government released Decree 102 – establishing the Timber Legality Assurance System of Viet Nam. Canada has been successfully identified as a positive, or preferred international supply region, recognized as a legal and sustainable supplier of forest products. Importers of products from the positive list have a simpler, and less burdensome process to demonstrate legality than importers of products from other countries.
Canada has been recognized by Vietnam for its sustainable forest management practices. One of the primary objectives of Canadian Wood Vietnam is to establish the Canadian brand as a preferred supplier of sustainable, certified softwood lumber products.
By attending this seminar, participants will learn more about:
• Our certification systems and key data is it relates to forestry management.
• Introduction to Hemlock and Douglas Fir – two key softwood species that are often used as substitutes for hardwoods in other parts of the world.
• Our “Try Canadian Wood” Program that offers trial volumes of wood to qualified manufacturers to test Canadian species in their product lines.
Time will also be made available for a question and answer period at the conclusion of the presentation…we look forward to seeing you there!
